You've narrowed it down to two neighborhoods. Astoria or Williamsburg. Both have great food, good transit, and a strong renter community. But they are not the same place and they are not the same price.

Here is the honest comparison.

The Rent Gap in 2026

Williamsburg costs more. Full stop. A 1BR in Williamsburg runs anywhere from $2,800 to $3,800 depending on the block and the building. In Astoria you are looking at $2,200 to $2,900 for the same size apartment.

That gap, roughly $500 to $700 per month, adds up to $6,000 to $8,400 per year. That is a vacation, an emergency fund, or six months of groceries.

Studios follow the same pattern. Williamsburg studios start around $2,400. Astoria studios start around $1,800.

2BRs in Williamsburg regularly hit $4,500 and above. In Astoria you can find solid 2BRs for $3,200 to $3,800.

What You Actually Get for the Money

In Williamsburg you get proximity to Manhattan (the L train puts you in 15 minutes), a neighborhood that has been aggressively developed over the last decade, and a concentration of bars, restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops that is hard to match anywhere in Brooklyn.

You also get smaller apartments for higher prices, more competition for rentals, and a neighborhood that feels more like a brand than a place at this point.

In Astoria you get more square footage, more building types (walkups, prewar buildings with real character, newer developments), and one of the most genuinely diverse neighborhoods in New York City. Greek food, Egyptian coffee, Colombian bakeries, Korean BBQ, all within a few blocks.

The vibe is less curated than Williamsburg. Some people find that refreshing. Some find it underwhelming. Depends what you are looking for.

The Commute Question

This is where it gets nuanced.

Williamsburg to Midtown Manhattan on the L train is about 20-25 minutes door to door. The L runs frequently and is generally reliable except when it is not, which happens.

Astoria to Midtown on the N, W, or R train is 25-35 minutes depending on where in Astoria you live. The N and W trains run frequently during peak hours. The R is slower.

If you work in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, Williamsburg wins on commute time. If you work in Midtown or the Upper East Side, Astoria is comparable or sometimes faster.

If you work in Long Island City, Astoria is significantly better.

Who Should Choose Williamsburg

  • The nightlife and restaurant scene is a priority
  • You have a budget of $3,000+ for a 1BR
  • You want to be in the center of where things are happening
  • You value walkability to a lot of options within 3 blocks

Who Should Choose Astoria

  • You want more apartment for your money
  • You work in Midtown, LIC, or anywhere in Queens
  • You value a neighborhood with real community character
  • Your budget for a 1BR is under $2,800
  • You want outdoor space nearby (Astoria Park is excellent)

The Honest Bottom Line

Williamsburg charges a premium for a brand. Astoria charges less for more. If you are renting on a budget or you want space and character over proximity to trendy bars, Astoria gives you better value in 2026.

If you need to be in Brooklyn, close to the L train, and the budget allows it. Williamsburg delivers what it promises.

Neither neighborhood is a bad choice. But they serve different renters.
